How to Find the Clay Powder for Your Element

Friday 22nd April is officially known as Earth Day. As a beauty brand that prioritises our connection to the Earth one of our core values is the use of natural, botanical ingredients that reduce harm to our planet and have amazing benefits for your skin. And what better hero ingredient to talk about on Earth Day then our elemental clays.

Our skincare range incorporated Chinese Medicine, particularly the theory of the Five Elements. Each type of clay is connected to one of these elements, which in turns corresponds uniquely to each person. Your element could be based on year of birth, emotion or skin type. Our elemental clay powders can then be used to create a bespoke treatment that balances the energy of the five elements and leaves you feeling relaxed and renewed.

A Little History of Clay

The use of clay for skincare dates back centuries, as far back as 2500 B.C. The healing and purifying benefits of clay were recognised by the Ancient Greeks, who used it to mix with plaster to treat fractures and Ancient Egyptians, who used it to smooth skin. During the First World War, Russian soldiers received 200g of clay every day to heal themselves and their horses of various ailments.

Which Clay Matches Your Element?

Wood Element – Green Montmorillonite Clay (from Montmorillon in Poitou-Charente, France)

SKIN TYPE: Either very oily or very dry/Acne and pustular spots

Montmorillonite clays were discovered in the 1800’s in Montmorillonite in France and are thought to be the purist on the earth. They are the result of volcanic ash that was previously naturally deposited in sea water. The beautiful green colour comes from a combination of iron oxides, algae and chlorophyll.

Green Montmorillonite Clay is good for skin rashes, acne and dandruff. It is rich in aluminium, magnesium, manganese, calcium, cobalt, copper, potassium, phosphorous, selenium, sodium and zinc.

Our Green Clay deeply cleanses and normalises the secretion of sebum to give a clearer complexion. It can also reduce the appearance of pigmentation or ‘age spots’. It drains toxins, exfoliates and helps to heal blemishes. It can also help relieve sore muscles and reduce joint pain. It remineralises and regulates sebum as well as being decongesting, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. It soothes and heals, cleans and purifies.

Fire Element – Red Illite Clay Fronnac  (found in Northern France)

How to Use Elemental Clay Powders

Always mix your clay in a bowl made of glass, porcelain, pottery or wood. Never put it into a metal bowl (except for stainless steel) and avoid plastic wherever possible – the same with your mixing spoon or spatula. This is to avoid oxidisation (ion exchange).

Mix together your chosen clay powder and mix with Aloe Glow . Mix well until it is nice and smooth. Leave the clay on the skin for 15 minutes or sooner if the clay starts to get dry.

When mixed with the Aloe Vera Gel it should be a nice spreadable consistency – not too thick or too thin – a little like the thickness of Greek Yoghurt. The clay mixture can be applied cold or warm to the skin. Only warm once, do not keep reheating the same clay. It is best to just mix up the amount for one client to keep it fresh.

Clay powder mixed with water can be used as a hair mask, just mix them together and apply through the hair and then rinse off after 30 minutes to an hour.
